ACTIVITIES

As we approach the end of another academic year you will be aware of the wide variety of concerts WWYM is involved with. Indeed we are performing at eleven events between now and the end of term. A highlight will be the Summer Festival at the Wiltshire Music Centre. I would like to draw your attention to a performance of the Gregson Tuba Concerto given by the West Wiltshire Youth Orchestra and soloist Mark Carter on Tuesday 5th July.

On Wednesday 29th June the Devizes & District Wind Band are giving a combined concert with the D S BIG BAND at Devizes School. This will be a very exciting event.

STAFF CHANGES

One of the most enthusiastic members of our team, Claire Schollick is to go on maternity leave at the end of this term. Conductor and founder of Chippenham Junior Wind she will be greatly missed and we wish her all the very best with the new baby. Her replacement will be announced in due course

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Michael Oliver who is retiring at the end of this term. Michael has never been directly involved with WWYM. However his outstanding recorder teaching has had a huge impact on the quality of hundreds of young musicians, particularly from the Devizes area, who have played in our ensembles. He has achieved very high standards with his recorder ensembles, playing at the National Festival of Music for Youth in London. We wish him a very happy retirement.

FUND RAISING

Some of you will have received a BETTER WARE catalogue. We are very grateful to Angela Henshall who is organising the sale of their products with a proportion of the profits going to WWYM. The WWYO and WWWB have been given the opportunity to purchase products and in due course Angela will distribute to all the other ensembles. There is a considerable amount of work involved for her. Please support this initiative and help raise funds for WWYM.

SUBSCRIPTION 2005/2006

This year we have been under considerable financial pressure both from the Wiltshire Music Service with the cost of staffing and the Wiltshire Music Centre with hire charges. It may interest you to know that a piece of wind band music costs £12 per minute and one piece for orchestra costs £140. The subscription next year will be £45 per year or £16 a term.

DATES FOR NEXT TERM

CJW, WWYO, D&DSE, WWSE, WWYS, DJS, WWJW, WWWB, and WWCB all start the week beginning 12th September. CJS, TJS, WJS, and D&DWB start the week beginning 19th September. Rehearsals for all ensembles finish the week ending 9th December. There will be no rehearsals the week beginning 24th October for two weeks due to half term.

Finally can I thank you all for your commitment and hard work this term. I hope you will have a very restful and enjoyable summer break

James Monckton

Musical Director WWYM
