ACTIVITIES
The West Wiltshire Young Musicians Christmas Festival this year will involve over 500 young musicians performing in five concerts at the Wiltshire Music Centre and in Devizes. All the programmes will be very varied, including Christmas music which will make a good start to the festive season. The Junior Strings have a special piece commissioned by Christopher Norton. It is a very busy time of the year for everyone, so can I thank you all in advance for your help and co-operation.
THE HOWARD EVANS MEMORIAL CONCERT
It is with great sadness that I have to announce the death of Howard Evans which happened after a short illness in July. Howard was employed by the Wiltshire Music Service as a guitar teacher and was assistant conductor to Chippenham Junior Strings.
I have been asked by his wife Bonnie to help organise the above concert. This will take place on Sunday 22nd January 2006 at the Wiltshire Music Centre , Bradford on Avon at 3.30 p.m. The programme will involve performances given by Howard’s friends who he played with before he became a teacher. The West Wiltshire String Ensemble will also be playing at the event. There will be a retiring collection and proceeds will go to Dorothy House.
STAFF CHANGES
Claire Schollick conductor to Chippenham Junior Wind had a baby girl. We hope to see Claire back with the band sometime next term. I am very grateful to Wendy Smith for taking over the band and preparing them for the Christmas Festival. She has done a fantastic job. |
WWYM WEBSITE
I have mentioned in previous letters that WWYM has a website. www.wwym.org.uk I am very grateful to John Arnold for managing the site. Please take a look; it has pictures, music and all relevant information about WWYM including term dates. The site will be updated regularly.
WWYM MUSIC LIBRARY
I have mentioned before the considerable amount of money WWYM spends on music each year. Our library is vast and probably priceless to the conductors. Some years ago Sue Blay and Ros Pendry put the Wind Band Library in some sort of order which seems to work very well. Two WMC volunteers and old friends of WWYM; Pat and Ian Ham have agreed to put all the string and orchestra music in order. They are also able to provide a very detailed data base of past programmes and performances and can tell the conductors exactly when a piece was previously performed by them at the WMC. For example I am thinking of doing the English Folk Song Suite with the WWYO next term, apparently we last performed this work in 2001. This information goes right back to when the WMC was first opened. I find this fascinating very useful and exciting.
Finally can I just mention that all dates for next term have been stated in your concert letters. I hope you will all have a fantastic Christmas and a very Happy New Year.
